The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is the 5th movie adaptation based on the LTR novels by Tolkien. It is by far this Hobbit fans favorite of the series. The movie picks up where “The Hobbit: the Unexpected Journey” left off. Seeing it in 3D was one of the ultimate joys and in my opinion is the only way to see the movie. The amount of 3d special effects and the “coolness” of the movie almost outshine the CGI used in avatar.
Sauron makes an appearance and totally kicks Gandalf’s behind. But Smaug takes the cake. Not only is he the biggest most realistic looking dragon he is cunning, manipulative and cruel. His vanity however is his downfall and he is driven away from his usurped treasure within the mountain. Although Smaug is by far my favorite villain portrayed from the Hobbit, none of the characters are as brave, athletic and calculating as those that play the elves. Legolas, son of the Elvenking Thranduil of Mirkwood, is an incredibly athletic, agile young warrior who bravely follows his heart to do what is right against all odds. The acrobatics performed by him and the other elves in the fight scenes would put even a samurai warrior movie put to shame. I do not recommend this movie for a date (unless your date is a die-hard LTR fan who wants nothing to do with you or your tongue until the movie is over). This movie is great for seeing with your buddies while wearing hobbit feet, pointy ears and a cape! SO get yours out of the closet and go see this film (IN 3D A MUST)
