Cagney: The Musical about a short, talented actor who wanted to do other things but play a tough guy is a splendid night at the theater. The very talented cast made up of Robert Creighton, who not only plays Cagney he also wrote the music and lyrics with Christopher McGovern. Creighton is a triple threat: Writer, dancer and actor and is perfection in the role. Also, the entire cast taps their hearts out, and tap lovers will be in tap heaven for every single incredible number that Joshua Bergasse uses to move the story.
I must give special praise to the tap of Josh Walden. He does a tap number that blew my mind. He got so high in the air I thought he might fly. He left me googly-eyed and put me in Euphoria!
I thank Mr. Bergasse for his perfect choreography. Whenever the cast was dancing the show was vibrant, extraordinary and moving. It is a must see. I hope “Cagney” has a long life Off-Broadway because it is a Broadway caliber show and cast and one not to miss. I saw a production of this at the York, and this version is much tighter and stronger. A sensational evening at the theater!
“Cagney” is playing at the WESTSIDE Theatre Upstairs.
