Last year, was the 40th Anniversary of the glorious movie ” Cabaret” starring the legendary Liza with a Z and Joel Grey. I was lucky enough to cover the event honoring the perfect film directed and choregraphed by legendary Bob Fosse. His direction and dance in the film made the film one of my favorite movie musicals of all time.
In the late 90’s I was fortunate to attend the revival at Studio 54 and I saw many in the role of Sally Bowles. I saw Natasha Richardson as well as Brooke Shields, Molly Ringwald and many others. I also saw Alan Cumming in the role of the Emcee who was perfect then and even better now. This revival of the past revival holds up. Alan Cumming and Danny Burstein impress. I wont lie, I did miss Fosse’s incredible direction and choregraphy. I wish they could have incorporated his dance into this show. I also wished the new Sally Bowles could have the vocal chops and energy of Liza with a Z and Natasha Richardson. This Sally seems like a baby doll and she did not have the stage presence of previous stars.
If you have never seen ” Cabaret” you will love this version. Alan Cumming and Danny Burstein are worth the price of admission alone and it is worth a visit but the lead actress is disappointing!
