Last night I saw ‘Sondheim’s Old Friends’
A breathtaking Sondheim musical masterpiece which included his greatest hits from West Side Story, Merrily We Roll Along, Gypsy, his greatest shows and hits!
I met Sondheim three times. Once at Forbidden Broadway I saw him watch Christina Bianco go into the words and when leaving I asked him what he thought of the show. He said it was pretty fucking great. He also knew who I was which made me faint!
There was,an event at Lincoln Center to honor him and I was there to cover it and do video interviews and video coverage. It went long and Sondheim had friends waiting for him at a nearby restaurant and said he would need to do the interview another time. I was just happy to be there. I also saw him at other theater off broadway and at one of Forbidden Broadway’s opening parties.
OLD FRIENDS would have pleased him. The cast were all exceptional. Bernadette was stunning and in great voice. She has not aged and did Red Riding Hood and Sunday In The Park who I saw with Mandy in the original run. Beth Leavel one of my all time favorites was witty and full of comic gems. Gavin Lee who I saw climbing ceiling’s, in Mary Poppins danced beautifully and I spoke to him backstage by the stage door and he was so kind as was Kevin Earley. I also adored an actress named Joanna Riding who reminded me of Sarah Jessica Parker, she was funny and a vision to look at.
I had the best time. Run and see it it closes in a few days. Worth seeing a shame it’s a limited run. It was magnificent and a definite for every Sondheim lover. Guilty+
