Theater Picks! Off Broadway Rules The Season!

This season most of my favorites have been Off Broadway or Off Off Broadway. This is a list of my favorites so far this season:

 Disaster

1″ Disaster” which makes fun of old time Disaster films. Jennifer Simard leads this cast and it is a must see if you like parody. Hilarious fun! ( St Lukes)

Jennifer Simard is a sure fire hoot as a shy Nun. She will make you howl with laughter. Go and see this hilarious show,

2.” Hand To God”- A demonic Puppet ride that is crude, rude and relentlessly funny. Not for the weak or timid. ( MCC- Lortel) (Closed)

3.” Greed The Musical”-  A musical revue about Greed. The entire cast are brilliant and it is a must see. ( New World Stages) (Closed)

4″. Forbidden Broadway”- Gerard Alessandrini’s parody of Broadway with  two new cast members. A must see. ( Davenport Theatre)

5.” Character Man”- Jim Brochu’s new show about all the character men he has admired and worked with. A very interesting play with music. (Urban Stages) (Closed)

6.” Stage Kiss” shows a relationship between two actors that had a hot and heavy relationship in the past and are now cast playing lovers in a really bad show about the same thing. It is very funny and Michael Crier Creighton plays a gay understudy forced to fill in when the leading man breaks his ankle. Watching Michael kiss the leading lady was one of the most hilarious parts of the show and he is a standout. The show is very funny and the entire cast are excellent. Michael C Creighton is the stand out. Make sure you use the bathroom before seeing the show so you don’t have any accident from laughing so hard. It is a blast! (Closed)

( Playwrights Horizons)

7. City of Conversation: The show is a brilliant political drama with Jan Maxwell in her best role to date. It is a must see and is playing for a limited run at Lincoln Center.

8. The Mystery of Irma Vep: One of the most hilarious spoofs of old vampire films. If you like shows like The 39 Steps, Charles Ludlam’s hilarious absurd play is a hoot.

Only people that love silly will enjoy it and I had one of the best nights of the season. Pure joy!

I will continue to add to this list but these are my favorite shows of the season thus far.

Broadway picks this season:

1. Beautiful- An incredible musical about Carol King. ( Sondheim)

2. Aladdin- If you love musical theater and ballroom dance you should not miss this Disney parody dance musical. With Music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Time Rice.

The GENIE- James Monroe Inglehart stops the show and the dance is a dream for ballroom dance lovers like me. 4 stars.
