Pipe Dream at City Center: A Sweet Saturday Night!
I grew up loving the music and stories of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein. Some of my favorite musicals " The Sound of Music" "South Pacific" " Carousel" and "Oklahoma were written by them. Pipe Dream which ran in 1955 is a less known musical which opened at City Center Encores this weekend for a short weekend run.( It ran on Broadway for 246 performances and made back its money for investors according to Wikipedia)
Pipe Dream has a very strange story that is at times bizarre because it is so unlike the other musicals they created. This production, even with the strange story shines from start to finish. Why does it shine? The story might have flaws but every detail of the Encores production shines from the super talented cast and ensemble. Even small ensemble cast members stand out such as Nicholas Ward with a very tiny solo. His deep glorious voice gave me goosebumps as it was pure magic.
Marc Bruni (Direction) Rob Berman(Music Direction) Kelli Barclay ( Choreography) work together with the incredible cast and giant orchestra to make this a very engaging and beautiful theater event. I did not want this production to end. It was joyful and glorious and everyone in this production shined but especially the musicians.
